What exactly am I buying?
JOULE: prepaid inference credit. Each JOULE covers $1 of model usage on the Voltio gateway at the providers' list prices. You can hold it in your wallet, or activate it into your API balance and start calling models.
Where does the discount come from?
From sellers. VOLT stakers receive freshly minted JOULE every hour, and many would rather have dollars today than inference later. They list it on the Grid at a discount they choose, and buyers always take the deepest discount first.
Is it really the same model?
Yes. Requests go to the same upstream model you'd call directly, with the same model id, parameters and streaming behaviour. Voltio changes who pays and how much, not what answers.
What fees are there?
The gateway adds no markup: a $1 call costs 1 JOULE. On the Grid a small protocol fee is added to your purchase and shown in the quote before you sign. Activating JOULE can carry a small activation fee, also shown up front.
Do you store my prompts?
The gateway keeps usage metadata (tokens, cost, timing) so your dashboard works. Prompt and completion bodies are streamed through rather than written to the ledger, and routing prefers providers with zero-data-retention terms where they offer them. Upstream providers' own policies still apply.
How do API keys work without an account?
Your wallet is the account. Sign a short message and the key is derived from that signature. Nothing to register, no password to leak, and signing the same message again recovers the same key.
Can I get a refund?
Unactivated JOULE sits in your wallet, and you can list it back on the Grid at any time. Activated balance is spent on usage and isn't refundable or withdrawable as cash.
Is JOULE an investment?
No. JOULE is a prepaid grant of product access. It isn't redeemable for cash from Voltio and isn't designed to appreciate. Buy what you plan to use.
Can AI agents buy on their own?
Yes. Every step is a plain contract call: an agent with a wallet can buy and activate in one transaction, derive its key by signing, and call the API. See the Protocol page or /agents.md.
Which chain, and what do I pay with?
Voltio settles on Robinhood Chain. You pay in USDG, a dollar stablecoin, and need a little ETH for gas.
